24.08.2006 - World Logging Championships won by Estonian team 29.09


The Estonian team, consisting of Taavi Ehrpais, Anto Laas and Andres Olesk, won the World Logging Championships held in Otepää on 16-19 August. The Italian team came in second, and the German team came in third.

In the individual rankings, the title of world champion went to Johann Raffl from Italy. Andres Olesk from Estonia was second and Germany’s Wolfgang Heidemann was third. Taavi Ehrpais was 7th and Anto Laas 10th in the individual rankings.

Patrick Walser from Liechtenstein was the best in the junior class. Mik Hansen from Estonia was second and Michael Stein from Germany was third.

The former world champion Ilja Shevtsov (Russia) was 39th in the individual rankings.

In total, 106 competitors from 27 countries competed in Otepää. The world champion was determined based on the results of five events. The competition consisted of five events: tree felling, fitting another chain, bucking by combined cut precision bucking and limbing.

The World Logging Championships have been held since 1970. This is the first time they were held in Estonia. This year, they were held under the auspices of the International Association for Logging Championships (IALC) for the first time. The competitions are organised by the Estonian Society of Foresters, OÜ Husqvarna Eesti, AS Stora Enso Mets, and RMK as the main organiser.

The state forest management agency RMK is a profit-making state agency, formed pursuant to the Forest Act, whose main objective is the effective and sustainable management of the state’s forests: reforestation, tending and use of forest and organisation of forest protection. RMK organises game upkeep in state forests and ensures the use of forests in relation to everyone’s right. RMK manages ca 40% of Estonian forest land.
